Use a Raspberry Pi to make an animated Elf on a Shelf

While the Elf on a Shelf is an American Christmas tradition, that doesn’t mean we can’t look at a cool project involving the decoration – especially when it includes a Raspberry Pi.

What we have here is a regular Elf on a Shelf whose left arm is hooked up to a servo motor. The motor is attached to a Raspberry Pi by way of a PivotPi servo controller and a battery bank gives the whole project power.

There’s also a distance sensor on the front of the shelf to detect motion, setting off the movement. The idea here is that you can wave at the Elf, and it can wave back.

The electronics are out in the open and there’s very little integration going on. We hope someone takes the idea and runs with it, packing all the electronics into the Elf itself.

Who knows, maybe a convincing prototype could convince the people who make Elf on a Shelf to start making smarter versions.

If you’d like to try this project yourself, there is a short written guide you can follow, or you can watch this video for a more general overview.

Bye ( ^_^)/
