Xbox One exclusive Scalebound has been cancelled

If you’re an Xbox One owner who was really looking forward to playing Platinum Games’s Devil May Cry/Final Fantasy mash-up Scalebound, we have some bad news.

The game is now officially vapourware.

Microsoft confirmed that it had pulled the plug on Scalebound in a statement it released to press late yesterday:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.” We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including “Halo Wars 2,” “Crackdown 3,” “State of Decay 2,” “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences.”

Eurogamer has reported that, in the hours since that statement was released, Microsoft has started removing clips and trailers of Scalebound from the official Xbox One YouTube channel. The site also notes that Scalebound footage is still available on Platinum Games’s YouTube channel, which could mean that the publisher retains the IP.

Scalebound was unveiled as an Xbox One exclusive at Microsoft’s E3 keynote in 2014. In the demo, which was presented by Platinum founder and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya, Scalebound promised eye-popping action in which sword-wielding protagonists teamed up with massive beasts to battle insane bosses. The game’s most recent demo took place at Gamescom last year.

According to a report on Kotaku, relations between Microsoft and Platinum Games soured and Scalebound’s development cycle had fallen massively behind schedule. The fact that Microsoft seems prepared to pull the plug on the game after four years of development – and the fact it’s a much-anticipated console exclusive – seems to back all of that up.

Scalebound’s future is unclear at this stage; while work on the project has concluded for the time being, it’s uncertain whether it’s dead for good or if Platinum could at some stage revive it. For now, fans of the Osaka-based developer have Nier: Automata to look forward to in March.
