You won’t need a PC or console to play this Elite: Dangerous game

Ever since we discovered DeeTwenty Geeking Venue in Johannesburg we’ve been addicted to Dungeons and Dragons.

That love might soon become a fleeting romance though as we’ve spotted something more intriguing.

Elite: Dangerous, the space exploration game is getting a tabletop role playing game. What’s more is that Frontier Developments have given the RPG its blessing.

The tabletop version of the space game is being developed by Spidermind Games which is running a Kickstarter campaign to secure funding for the game.

As in the videogame, players will start with their own spaceship which they will be able to upgrade, improve and sell should they want something more powerful.

Just like in Dungeons and Dragons, Elite: Dangerous RPG (EDRPG) will have one person dictating the adventure that a group of players undertakes. The Gamesmaster (GM) will assume the role of all villains and non-player characters encountered in the game.

The GM will be aided by a number of supplements that can be used to craft the adventure. At present there appear to be four supplements but there are plans for more in the pipeline.

The Kickstarter project is fully funded (£48 000 raised of a £45 000 goal at time of writing) and the creators have introduced various stretch goals for backers to unlock including Map Packs and various books and guides.

To back this project and get straight into the action at release you’ll need to pledge £20 (~R330) for the Mostly Harmless reward which includes the core manual in PDF format. For £40 you’ll get all four existing supplements as well as the core manual. Potential GM’s will have to opt for the more expensive of the two pledge tiers.

Other pledge tiers include T-shirts and hardcover game manuals though these are limited so you’ll need to secure yours sooner rather than later.

Sadly game doesn’t include an explanation for why you’ve suddenly stopped playing Dungeons and Dragons; you’ll need to craft that yourself.
