Communications committee comes to consensus on interim SABC board

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee of Communications has come to an agreement on how it should appoint an interim board for the public broadcaster.

Before the inquiry began, it was agreed that the committee should follow due processes in appointing the interim board, to avoid any legal fault-finding with the proceedings.

The committee said board candidates should possess in-depth knowledge of the Broadcasting Act, legal expertise and experience in dealing with human resources, among other qualities.

The committee further agreed that since the process of appointing an interim board does not require interviews, different parties are tasked to come up with names to be deliberated on and finalised by the committee.

Last week, the EFF called for the public to suggest names for board members by communicating with it on its various digital platforms.

“At the same time, the Chief Whips’ Forum will also assist in managing the political dynamics associated with the short-listing process in order to ensure smooth consensus at the committee level,” Parliament said.

Meanwhile, the ad hoc committee is expected to release its report on the inquiry soon.
