Map Monday: How powerful is your SA passport?

If you’re a South African passport holder, you can travel to 61 countries across the world without a visa and 29 countries where you’ll have to present one upon arrival, making our passport the 94th most powerful in the world out of 170 countries, according to 2016/17 Passport Index.

Passport Index provides annual real-time global rankings of the world’s passports according to how many countries one passport can be used visa-free.

Overall, Germany takes the lead with a visa-free score of 157. Singapore overtakes South Korea for second place with a visa-free score of 156, becoming the highest-ranked Asian passport, while Sweden took overall third place. South Africa’s visa-free score is 90.

A visa-free score represents the number of countries a passport holder can visit visa-free or with visa-on-arrival.

South Africa dropped down from its 93rd ranking in 2016, after New Zealand introduced a visa requirement for all citizens wanting to enter the country.

South Africa allows 74 passports in without a visa, ranking it 62nd in terms of visa-free requirements globally.

In Africa, South Africa is the third most powerful passport, following Seychelles and Mauritius.

You can explore other rankings and compare South Africa to other countries on the Passport Index website.
