Console gamers get a shot at the DGL Masters 2017 R1.5 mil prize pool

We love a bit of high-stakes esports here at htxt.africa, which is why we were excited to hear the news that the DGL Masters prize pool for 2017 sits at around R1.5 million.

This year the DGL has added a new game to the line-up: FIFA 17. Gamers will be competing for glory in two tournaments as well as their share of a R120 000 prize pool. The FIFA 17 tournament is open to anybody who fancies themselves a bit of a digital footy pro.

Esports titles Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Dota2 will also be played and each have a prize pool of R550 000.

As was the case in 2016 there will also be two Masters Cups happening throughout the year which will have a R110 000 prize pool.

Tough competition

Ten multi-gaming organisations (MGO) will be taking part in the DGL Masters but reigning CS:GO champs, Bravado Gaming, will not be among them.

“Amongst other plans we’re looking at competing on the International stage as much as possible, dipping and diving between the local and international scene,” Bravado Gaming chief executive officer Andreas Hadjipaschali told Telkom Gaming.

“Because of this reason, we are unable to commit to the Telkom Digital Gaming League Masters programme as we cannot assure that we’ll always be present for league games within the two legs as we need to be.”

We’re still waiting for word on which MGOs will be competing in the tournament but its clear that the stakes are high this year, especially given that the winning teams walk away with over R550 000 each.

And your parents said playing video games would never make you any money.
