Spectrum for all? Icasa hearings on RF policy kick off tomorrow

South Africa’s National Radio Frequency Plan (NRFP) needs updating and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) is holding hearings this week to address this.

The reasons for the update to the NRFP are threefold. Firstly, Icasa wants the plan to reflect the final acts outlined by in the World Radio Conference 2015. These acts outline which spectrum needs to be allocated in South Africa so that is it used efficiently.

To this end the authority wants to ensure that spectrum allocations reflect the usage of radio frequency spectrum until the next World Radio Conference in 2019.

Closer to home Icasa wants to ensure that the NRFP is in-line with the Southern African Development Community Frequency Allocation Plan.

Icasa has also said that the update to the NRFP will herald the development of the Frequency Migration Plan which will address how spectrum is used.

The hearings will take place on the 9th and 10th of February at Icasa’s head office in Sandton, Gauteng. Oral presentations will be made by MTN, Cell C, Vodacom, SABC, and Sentech among others.

If you’re a member of the media or you’re simply interested to hear how Icasa plans to update the NRFP the hearings kick off at 08:30 and run through until 15:30.
