Raspberry Pi gif camera upgraded to include a flash

In October of last year we brought you the story of the PIX-E – a camera built on the Raspberry Pi that would only capture gifs.

Now maker Mindy Mosher has altered the original camera to make room for a LED flash.

You can see an example gif below of the camera working in low light, featuring Mosher.

We don’t think she’s actually as worried as she looks. In the description of the project she states that she’s “infatuated with all things spooky”, so we assume she was going for the horror found footage aesthetic.

To make your own PIX-E you’ll need this guide hosted on hackster.io. A Raspberry Pi Zero, camera module, battery and 3D printed housing are among the items in the components list.

For the updated version with the flash, called the “PIX-G”, you’ll want to head over the Thingiverse. There you’ll find the files to 3D print the updated housing, as well as short explanation by Mosher.

We’re not entirely surprised by this addition to the project. The creator of the original PIX-E, Nick Brewer, stated that it’s “designed to be modified”. In his list of suggestions he did not mention a flash function, so it’s nice to see the initiative.

We’re still waiting on one of those suggestions though, adding networking capabilities to post the gifs straight to the internet.
Edit: There is now a hackster.io guide to replicate this project.
