Learn to make genetically modified organisms online, for free

Have you found yourself sitting in your kitchen lately wondering how to make bread, cheese or yogurt? How about genetically modified organisms?

A new online course called Synthetic Biology One will teach you how to do all of that while teaching you how to sequence DNA.

Now before we go further we do have to warn you that the course doesn’t start from scratch. “We assume that our audience has one year of university-level study in biology and one year of university-level study in math,” reads a missive on the website.

Of course, who’s to say that you can’t go and do some additional reading and learning online?

The courses are presented by the Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity and sponsorship keeps the courses free for anybody to access.

Synthetic Biology One covers subjects such as Biology and Mathematics and will teach you to read, write and edit DNA sequences. Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how awesome the internet is and how this course would not be possible without it?

The subjects are presented in units with video lessons guiding students through the material. You will also be required to take a quiz at the end of each unit.

Each course should take around four hours to work through and at the end you’ll have some knowledge you probably didn’t at the start.

We should also point out that you won’t be getting a degree or certificate or any sort of qualification from Synthetic Biology One which is a bit of a let down but we find it hard to be too disappointed given we can learn how to sequence DNA, for free.

You can register at Synthetic Biology One online right now but enrollment has not yet begun as the course is still in beta according to the official Twitter account.

That said, it’s worth registering now to get notified when enrollment does begin.
