Booby trap the office kitchen with an Arduino and some fruit

Both April Fool’s and Arduino Day may be over, but the people at circuito.io are still creating electronic pranks.

Their latest invention is the ‘Evil Fruit Bowl’. Under the regular wooden bowel you’ll (hopefully not) find a SparkFun Arduino Pro Mini, a battery, speaker and a load cell.

The load cell measures the weight of the bowl’s contents and, when a piece of fruit is removed, the speaker will play something to spook the hungry victim.

You can see it in action below. We’re not 100% sure the reactions are genuine, but we did catch something else: the circuito.io office kitchen is stocked with hard liquor. Are you guys hiring?

Like the other projects we’ve featured from this team – like the drone air gates and coffee sensor – this isn’t the most involved project. Instead, it acts as a teaching tool.

It’s here to show off components that the circuito.io service previously did not cover with code libraries or snippets. This is what the company calls “Lite Components” which can be found in their app under “unverified” and “no code”. If you’re using it in your next maker project, and find one of your components, make sure to message them asking that they cover it.

This project also acts as a reminder to enter the still running contest to create a project for April Fool’s / Arduino Day, which is open until 15th April.

Everything you need to make your own Evil Fruit Bowl can be found on hackster.io.
