Google’s new AutoDraw AI will guess what your terrible drawings are

Google has lifted the veil on one of its latest tools, AutoDraw.

Best thought of as an autocorrect for artists, AutoDraw takes your scribbles and offers up suggestions as to what it is you’re drawing with alarming accuracy.

Users can then either choose to select their portrayal of the subject or replace it with a drawing done by a more competent artist. Once you’ve selected the colours you like and added text (if that’s what you need) you can then download the drawing.

The tool was built by Dan Motzenbecker and Kyle Phillips at Google Creative Lab.

Google says that AutoDraw can currently guess hundreds of drawings but hopes to add more over time with the help of artists and users.

The point of the tool is to give those that aren’t blessed with artistic prowess the ability to design things like greeting cards or posters. Think of it like Clipart for the 21st Century.

AutoDraw is free to use on any device so long as it has an internet connection and a way to draw, just head over to the official website and unleash your inner artiste.

Of course, we don’t just trust that something works, we try to break it.

So this morning before my morning cup of coffee I tried to confuse AutoDraw, and these are the results.

Google’s interpretation of our header image.
No, it isn’t Batman.
See, Google knew it was a cat.
No way Google was guessing this one.
Nevermind, and that is better.
