Top SA Dota 2 teams compete for R110 000 in cash this May

For those of you with friends that love esports, prepare to see a whole lot less of them in the coming weeks.

The Digital Gaming League (DGL) has announced that it will be hosting a Dota 2 Masters Cup in Midrand from 19th – 21st May.

The tournament will feature eight local teams including DGL Masters 2016 champs White Rabbit Gaming. Other teams competing include eXdee Gaming, xTC Gaming, Aperture Gaming, Energy Esports and Pulse Gaming.

All of these earned direct invites to the tournament thanks to their performance during the first leg of the DGL Masters.

Another two teams – Mythic Gaming and Veneration E-Sports – have been invited to the tournament because they finished in at the top of the recent Community Shield qualifiers.

The Masters Cup will be a double-elimination style tournament which means hard work for the teams but lots of awesome local Dota action for viewers.

This will be the first Major of the year in the build-up to the Dota 2 Masters Grand final in July. While this tournament has a prize pool of R110 000, the grand finals will boast a prize pool of R550 000 in cash.

If you’re looking for some more esports action to tide you over until 19th May, Valve’s Dota 2 Kiev Major kicks off on the 24th of April.

Then on 7th May Mettlestate and Samsung host the Samsung Galaxy CS:GO Championship LAN Final. This local tournament has a R1 million prize pool and should be well worth watching, so much so in fact that we’ll be attending that tournament.

If you prefer playing over watching it’s worth remember that Kwesé and ESL are looking for teams for ESL’s first African esports tournament.
