Nintendo announces new 2DS XL handheld console

Well here’s a turn up for the books.

Just over a month and a half after Nintendo released the versatile Switch, the Japanese console maker has revealed it plans to release a new handheld console.

The new Nintendo 2DS XL, as it is called, is set for release in the USA on July 28th for a rather reasonable $149.99 (~R1995), which is $50 less than the console it looks the most like – the Nintendo 3DS XL.

Essentially what you’re getting for your money is the functionality of the Nintendo 2DS (that affordable gaming slab) in the sleek housing of a Nintendo 3DS. Like the 3DS XL, the 2DS XL boasts a thumbstick, a D-pad, shoulder and face buttons, two screens, 4GB of onboard storage, an NFC reader for amiibo support and a microSDHC slot for extra storage.

It doesn’t have any 3D functionality but if that doesn’t matter to you, this is probably the best Nintendo handheld to pick up.

When it launches, the 2DS XL will have two new games available for it: Miitopia, an RPG involving Nintendo Miis (that would be avatars for those of you scratching your heads) and Hey! Pikmin – we love ourselves some Pikmin.

Now the bad news: while the United States and Japan have confirmed release dates, Europe and the UK don’t and, yes you guessed it, there’s no word on when or if the Nintendo 2DS XL will be available to buy in South Africa. Still, we can live in hope and the fact that South Africa was included in the Nintendo Switch’s global launch so we have reason to be optimistic the 2DS XL may arrive here sooner rather than later.
