Valve smashes Portal and Dota 2 worlds together again with rare cosmetic item
During the build up to The International 6 last year, Dota 2 players were asked to vote on which hero would receive an Arcana cosmetic set.
For those of you who don’t play Dota 2 an Arcana set is the highest quality cosmetic set you can get for a hero. As such Valve only releases these cosmetic items very rarely and they cost R485. Yes, R485 for a cosmetic item.
During the 2016 Arcana vote one hero in particular captured the attention of the community, Io.
This hero’s model is a literal ball of light and the vote to get an Io Arcana item became something of a meme because how do you create something incredible that folks will buy, for a a ball of light?
The vote concluded and Io lost out on a super rare cosmetic to Juggernaut. The community responded with calls that the vote had been rigged for a few days before everybody forgot that Io was ever in with a shot at getting an Arcana.
Only joking Dota players never forget and neither did Valve.
Yesterday evening the developer announced that International Battle Pass owners who reach level 245 will receive an exclusive Io Companion Cube Arcana with custom animations, effects and kill sounds.
So how do you make a ball of light awesome? You turn it into a Companion Cube from Portal of course.
This is not the first time Valve has merged the world of Portal and Dota 2. In 2013 the firm released the Portal Pack in the Dota Store which let players choose GLaDOS as their announcer.
Unlike other Arcana items which are available at all times through the Dota 2 store the Benevolent Companion will only be available until the end of The International and will not be available on the market nor will it be tradeable.
Since the International Battle Pass was released on 5th May the prize pool has grown to an immense $9.6 million and with the added temptation of an exclusive Io Arcana we suspect that last year’s prize pool of $20.7 million should be easily surpassed.
