Video will account for 75% of mobile web traffic by 2022 – report

Ericsson has released its Mobility Report for 2017 and the firm forecasts a tremendous amount of growth for video.

Following its research Ericsson forecasts that by 2022 the world’s mobile internet users will consume 71 exabytes of data per month with approximately 75% of that figure being eaten up by video. At the end of 2016 the world’s mobile internet users had consumed 8.8 exabytes.

The key driver in this consumption is video content from the likes of YouTube. Google’s video sharing platform accounts for between 40 – 70% of internet traffic across networks in Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK and USA.

Netflix on the other hand accounts for 10 – 20% of traffic on networks in those countries. With that having been said, a number of social networks are now hosting video which will contribute to that rising figure.

Into Africa

This is all very nice but, as we know, connectivity in Africa is hard to come by. This Ericsson says is getting better with Africa adding 9 million mobile broadband connections to the web in 2016.

While this growth is not as grand as India – which added 43 million new connections last year – technologies such as LTE and the demand for faster internet and a better user experience could increase mobile broadband subscriptions in Africa and the Middle East region threefold between now and 2022.

At present users in the MEA region consume 1GB of data every month on their smartphone but Ericsson forecasts that this figure could climb 36% to 8.2GB by 2022.

This coupled with cheaper smartphones from Chinese manufacturers and a younger population means that the demand for high speed mobile internet in Africa is growing, we just need telcos and government to work together to provide that access.
