New SABC board nominations closing this Friday

Nominations for a new board to hopefully steer the SABC to calmer waters for the next five years, close this Friday and there’s still time for the public to submit their choices.

While the interim board continues trying to clean up as much as it can at the public broadcaster, a permanent board will need to be appointed later this year.

Twelve members will be appointed by President Jacob Zuma after the nomination, shortlisting and interview process is concluded in Parliament.

The CEO, CFO and COO will be appointed in a separate official recruitment process and are not nominated by the public.

The final list is decided upon by the National Assembly, which then sends the names to the President who signs them into their positions. The Minister of Communications has no legal right to appoint or remove members of the board.

Members of the board must be people who:

  • Are suited to serve on the board by virtue of their qualifications, expertise and experience in the fields of broadcasting policy and technology, broadcasting regulation, media law, business practice and finance, marketing, journalism, entertainment and education, social and labour issues.
  • Are committed to fairness, freedom of expression, the right of the public to be informed, as well as openness and accountability on the part of those holding public office.
  • Represent a broad cross-section of the population of the Republic.
  • Are committed to the objectives and principles as enunciated in the Charter of the SABC.
Are South African citizens permanently resident in the country.

SOS Coalition and Media Monitoring Africa have made it easier for anyone wishing to submit a nomination to do so without any hassles. You can request to have the instructions and document templates sent to your email and use it to follow the official prodcedure.

Nominations close at 4pm on Friday.
