SNES Classic Mini to ship this September

As if there weren’t enough consoles already in the market for players to buy, Nintendo has announced that it’s releasing the SNES Mini Classic.

This mini-console – much in the same vein as the NES Mini Classic that was launched last year – will hit retail racks in Japan, Europe and the USA on September 29th costing around $80 (~R1 027).

The SNES Mini comes pre-loaded with 21 classic titles and, yes, players will be able to play them over HDMI. Here’s the full list of games:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox
  • Star Fox 2
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Yoshi’s Island

Eagle-eyed Nintendo fans will note that this list includes Starfox 2, a game that up until now has never seen commercial release.

Nintendo has also vowed to ship more units to retail than it did with the NES Mini Classic, which was as rare as hen’s teeth and was discontinued earlier this year.

“We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition,” Nintendo told USgamer.

“Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.”

Now, we know what all our readers are probably asking at this stage: “Is this console going to be made available locally?” Well, right now, we don’t know, but we have reached out to Nintendo’s local distributor this morning asking if the console will be released on our shores and, if it will be, how much it’s likely to cost. When we have updates, you shall have them too.

In the meantime, how many of our readers are interested in SNES Mini? And are there any classics from that console you feel should have been included. Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook and Twitter.
