Nokia and Carl Zeiss have been reunited by HMD Global

Since HMD Global debuted its slew of new Nokia phones at MWC 2017 the world has been eager to know what else the firm has planned for the storied brand.

Today we have a bit of interesting news that is sure to make the folks at Huawei and Apple take notice of this Finnish brand once more. HMD Global has struck a deal with Carl Zeiss to include the firm’s optics in Nokia smartphones.

For those of you that can remember, the partnership between the two was great and something we really missed in Nokia’s absence from the market.

Of course, great optics do not a great camera make which is why HMD Global has said that the pair will work together to “advance the quality of the total imaging experience on smartphones spanning the entire ecosystem from software, services, through to screen quality, and optic design.”

We’re more than a little curious to see what the partnership can create, but we suspect we’ll be waiting until HMD Global announces a new handset.

To be clear, the current Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 won’t sport Carl Zeiss optics or any new camera gear. There are rumours floating about that HMD is gearing up to release a premium smartphone soon and that might feature the new snapper tech.

Given that HMD is positioning its phones to appeal to the mid-range market we’re quite excited to see a great camera on a cheap phone.
