Adobe says Flash will be dead by 2020

Adobe has announced it’s finally passing the death sentence on Flash.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. Google, Microsoft and Apple all washed their hands of it some time ago and more and more developer have been turning HTML5 as a substitute, since Flash has been riddled with holes and exploits for ages. It was also a hellish battery drain when used on smart devices.

Now, it seems, Adobe has made peace with the fact that its plug-in’s lifespan has run its entire course, and has made an announcement to this effect on its official blog.

“Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash,” the post reads. “Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.”

The post goes on to say that while the end for Flash is now in sight, Adobe is aware that many services still use it and it’s not going to abandon them entirely. Instead it’s going to work with partners – including Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft and Google – to help these services migrate their businesses. In other words, they Adobe isn’t leaving anyone in the lurch.

“Several industries and businesses have been built around Flash technology – including gaming, education and video – and we remain committed to supporting Flash through 2020, as customers and partners put their migration plans into place,” the post reads.

So there you go. RIP Flash. And don’t think it hasn’t been a pleasure… because it hasn’t.
