How to switch back to the old YouTube layout

EDIT: It seems that the ability to easily switch back to the old layout, as detailed below, has been removed. We’ll poke around and see if some other method exists.

A few days ago YouTube got a major rework and layout change that came with a lot of new additions, but inevitably caused some disdain.

If you simply don’t like the new layout for aesthetic reasons, or you’ve had some functionality problems (our sidebar on the left refused to show up sometimes) there is an easy way to go back to how things were.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Click on your user icon in the top right corner.
  2. Click on “Restore old YouTube”.
  3. Provide a reason why you’re going back, if you’re so inclined.
  4. Click “Submit”.
  5. The page will reload and everything should be as it was.

While not necessary, we do recommend that you provide a reason that you’ve elected to change, so that Youtube can see to your input.

Also note that changing this option appears to be tied to your browser and not your account. If you use multiple browsers with the same account to test things out, like we do, you’ll need to change them all.

We’ve had a look around the YouTube app and we can’t seem to find a similar option to revert the changes. This makes sense as it is probably tied to the version number of the app.

If you’re really not into it the only way around right now seems to be going back to a previous version. If you decide to do this, do not download random APKs.

If we’re completely mistaken and you’ve found a way to go back to the old layout on mobile, please let us know on Facebook or Twitter and we’ll update this story.
