Star Wars Episode IX director axed

Lucasfilm has fired the director of Star Wars: Episode IX Colin Trevorrow.

Episode IX is the film that’s supposed to wrap up the current trilogy of Star Wars films, which began with The Force Awakens.

Colin Trevorrow has directed a number of indie flicks, but his CV also includes the blockbuster Jurassic World, which did remarkably well at the box office racking up over $1 billion in box office receipts.

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ,” Lucasfilm said on the official Star Wars blog.

This is the second time this year that Lucasfilm has parted company with the director and upcoming Star Wars film. Back in June Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were let go from the production of the planned origin story of Han Solo, citing ‘creative differences’ as the reason. The directors were best known for The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street – both of which performed respectably at the box office. They were replaced with director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind).

Lucasfilm has yet to announce a replacement for Trevorrow, but since initial shooting on Episode IX wasn’t set to begin until early next year, the studio still has time. Whomever gets the job, however, will have their work cut out for them; The Force Awakens made over £2 billion at the box office and expectations are high that this year’s instalment will repeat that success. So, no pressure then…
