Tim Cook says the iPhone X’s $999 price tag is a “value price”

Last week Apple unveiled the iPhone X that carries with it a price tag of $999.

While the phone does have a boatload of “new” technology such as Face ID and an edge-to-edge display we hadn’t seen anybody calling the handset value for money. Until now.

In an interview with Good Morning America Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook was asked to answer a few questions put forward by viewers. One question – indeed the first question – was from Twitter user Anna Maria.

In response Cook said, “It’s a value price actually, for the technology that you’re getting. As it turns out most people are now paying for phones over long periods of time and so very few people will pay the price tag of the phone initially.”

The Apple CEO also added that many folks trade-in their handsets to further reduce the price of upgrading.

Now we’ve used the word “value” a few times before, most recently as regards the Samsung Z4 which has a price tag of R1 499. Looking at the word on the street the iPhone X could cost as much as R20 000 when it lands in South Africa though official pricing is yet to be announced.

We get it, the iPhone X is packed with features but saying that the price is worthy of such leaps forward like an edge-to-edge display (done by Samsung and Xiaomi before) and facial recognition (done to a degree by Samsung and Windows Hello) just feels like you’re trying to pull a fast one.

You can watch the full interview below and snigger at the mentions of augmented reality being made available to the masses. Once again Apple, AR was used heavily in Pokemon GO, and you don’t need to be a techie to figure that out.
