New trailer for Netflix series The Punisher drops

Ever since The Punisher almost stole the show in the second series of Daredevil, Marvel fans have been waiting with baited breath for the full length series featuring Frank Castle.

Marvel and Netflix announced this venture in April of last year and there’s been a teaser doing the rounds that hasn’t really revealed much, apart from the fact that Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, Mob City) will reprise the role as Frank and he still has a voice that sounds like he chainsmokes three packs of cigarettes a day.

Now, however, a full trailer has dropped and if anyone out there was worried that Netflix would dial back the blood and bullets for Frank Castle’s debut series, they can rest easy. If you still need convincing, have a gander at the trailer below:

Opening with the gloomy bars from Metallica’s ‘One’, the trailer gives a brief glimpse into Frank Castle’s happier days – before his whole family was gunned down in a sting operation that went horribly wrong – and then it looks like wall-to-wall action.

Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that Marvel is still being awfully cagey about the show’s planned release date and it’s redacted at the end of the trailer. The only detail that’s confirmed is the fact that it’s slated for release this year – but we all knew that anyway.

It’ll be interesting to see how The Punisher is received; while Marvel’s most recent superhero series, The Defenders, screened to pretty positive reviews, Iron Fist, which landed early this year, was roundly panned. Marvel needs an unqualified hit to keep up its Netflix momentum. Maybe Frank and his pitch black approach to crime-fighting could be just the show it needs.
