The Tamagotchi is coming back to steal your free time

Anybody that grew up in the late 1990s will remember the “joy” that a small plastic shell encasing a digital pet could bring them.

Sadly I was not one of those people because my school banned students from caring for their Tamagotchi’s during school hours.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the small egg-shaped digital pet the Tamagotchi will be released in the US for $15 (~R203) but there’s no word yet on whether the toy will be released in other parts of the world.

The toy is 60 percent smaller than the original Tamagotchi but aside from that not much has changed. There is still an LCD display with no back light and three physical buttons that allow you to interact with your pet.

The question we have is whether anybody actually needs/wants a Tamagotchi in an age where we can download anything, even virtual pets to our smartphones.

That having been said I’m finding it really hard not to reach for my wallet and fork out the $15 to experience a piece of my childhood that I missed out on.
