Twitter explains why it banned Rose McGowan

Earlier this week Twitter banned the account of Rose McGowan after she began blasting Harvey Weinstein.

The actress posted news of the ban to her Instagram account stating, “Twitter has suspended me. There are powerful forces at work. Be my voice.”

As you can see McGowan’s ban wasn’t exactly explained by Twitter leading many to believe that her public vilification of Weinstein had been the reason for it.

For those that aren’t aware Weinstein was accused of sexually assaulting more than a dozen women and paying them off for their silence earlier this week.

McGowan’s ban raised the ire of several users who pointed out that Twitter allowed tweets from white supremacists and even highly controversial tweets from the US president to remain on its service.

Now Twitter has come out and explained why McGowan’s account was banned.

“We want to explain that her account was temporarily locked because one of her tweets included a private phone number, which violates of our terms of service. The tweet was removed and her account has been unlocked. We will be clearer about these policies and decisions in the future,” a Twitter spokesperson told The Register.

As you might imagine, this explanation didn’t fly with Twitter users who told chief executive officer Jack Dorsey that they feel his firm selectively applies its terms and conditions to users.

We have been unable to determine whether McGowan did tweet a phone number. That having been said we do quite like this retort from McGowan shortly after her account was reinstated.

When indeed.
