Twitter outlines how it plans to make the network safer

There are some really big problems at Twitter and the social network knows it.

While it does roll out features such as increased characters for tweets many users want to feel safer and rightly so.

Now Twitter has outlined its plans to make the platform a safer place by tweaking some of the Twitter rules.

“Far too often in the past we’ve said we’d do better and promised transparency but have fallen short in our efforts. Starting today, you can expect regular, real-time updates about our progress,” said Twitter.

Some of these have been a long time coming but some of the tweaks Twitter announced should really have been there from the get-go.

Later this month Twitter will begin to treating posts that feature non-consensual nudity a lot stricter. Twitter wants to provide greater protection for victims and users that do post nude images of a person without their consent will be immediately suspended.

On that note Twitter is changing how it handles suspension. At the same time Twitter cracks down on non-consensual nudity it will also allow accounts suspended for abuse to appeal the suspension.

The real value here is Twitter will tell users how they violated its rules. As we saw with the Rose McGowan incident Twitter is not exactly good at telling users what they did wrong so this change would be welcome.

The biggest updates appear to be headed our way in November.

Organisations that use violence to advance their cause will no longer be welcome on Twitter from 3rd November. Media that contains hateful imagery and hate symbols will also be banned from Twitter in November.

One of the more interesting new additions to the rules is that of unwanted sexual advances. Twitter says it already takes action on this kind of content but it will now be explicitly called out in the rules.

It’s nice to see Twitter taking ownership of its issues but change needs to happen and hopefully these plans are properly implemented.
