Amazon is turning The Lord of the Rings into a multi-season series

Seemingly not content with having just one TV show that’s worth an Amazon Prime Video subscription (The Grand Tour for those wondering) Amazon has announced that it will be turn The Lord of the Rings into a television series.

The firm made the announcement late yesterday that it would be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.

“The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said head of scripted series at Amazon Studios, Sharon Tal Yguado in a statement.

In a press release issued by Amazon the firm said the television adaption would “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.”

There is also the possibility of a spin-off series. Perhaps a cooking show staring Merry and Pippin or a sword care series with Aragorn.

We kid of course but we have had a lot of The Lord of the Rings world what with three movies for the tale of the ring and another three about Bilbo. Call us old but we’re suffering from Lord of the Rings fatigue.

That having been said, the way folks countdown the release of a new season of Game of Thrones tells us that perhaps it’s just us that have grown weary of Middle-earth.

No release date or additional details about the Lord of the Rings trilogy have been announced yet.
