EA lowers Battlefront 2 hero costs after massive backlash

EA says that hero costs in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will be lowered ahead of the game’s launch this Friday.

The news comes hot on the heels of one of the biggest backlashes from the gaming community to occur for a while, over the cost Battlefront 2’s loot boxes. Fans have been very vocal about the fact that, up until today, unlocking top tier heroes in the game would take days of grind-work, which would not only see them miss out on loot boxes, but also put them at a distinct disadvantage in the game’s online mode.

In a blog post, Executive Producer at DICE John Wasilczyk announced that the in-game costs for Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, Leia Organa and Iden would all be reduced by around 75%.

“Listening, and providing choices in how you play, will always be our principle with Star Wars Battlefront II. We want to ensure the game is balanced and fun both today and for years into the future,” Wasilczyk wrote.

While some might say this is a step in the right direction, we’re going to go ahead and predict that the backlash isn’t going to end here. After all, much like Need For Speed: Payback, Battlefront 2 is a game that’s being sold at full price at retail by a publisher who still seems intent on gouging more money out of players after purchase. To make matters worse, those players who prepared to open their wallets will gain an edge on players who don’t.

In his blog post, Wasilczyk said that Battlefront 2’s developers will be conducting an AMA on reddit tomorrow to address some of the concerns they’ve seen raised there. A brave mood indeed. We’re bringing popcorn.
