3D-printed guns: the documentary

Earlier this year Cody Wilson, of Defense Distributed, released his plans for a 3D-printed firearm. The Liberator was downloaded hundreds of thousands of times before the US State Department requested him to remove the 3D printing files from the servers for his company, DefCad.

But the damage had been done. 3D-printed, open-source weapons had been made available to the internet – where things go to spread like viruses, rather than die and whither from memory. To highlight how this has changed things, and to show us how easy it is to get a working Liberator, Mashable’s produced a short documentary featuring Cody Wilson, the Liberator, and software engineer Travis Lerol who printed a gun on his $1 300 (R13 000) printer using just $30 (R300) in materials.
