Facebook & Instagram to take on Twitter & Vine?

Facebook recently sent out invitations to a mysterious press event being held on June 20, 2013, and the internet has exploded with speculation on what the company might unveil. Tech site Techcrunch initially thought it might be a new newsreader to replace the soon-to-be-retired Google Reader, but as time has passed a more exciting possibility has emerged: a new short-form video-sharing service that will compete directly with Twitter-owned Vine.

As Facebook bought Instagram a year ago but hasn’t appeared to be doing anything with it, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the company will launch a new video-sharing service that will somehow integrate with Instagram and challenge Vine’s dominance of the short-form video post.

Vine is a video-sharing app that shoots 6-second clips that are then uploaded directly to Twitter. Launched in January 2013, it has proved a hit with some pretty creative people, although initially it was mostly used to let people show off what’s on their desks.

If some sort of short-form video app is indeed what Facebook announces on the 20th, prepare to have your Facebook feed invaded by short videos of your friends’ cats, kids, cluttered desktops as well as the occasional stroke of genius.
