Chrysler recall uncertain for South Africa

Last week Chrysler Group said that it would not comply with requests for a recall of its Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The two models are susceptible to catching fire when struck from behind, in an accident.

Now, the company’s changed its mind, under pressure from the US government, and 2.7-million vehicles will be recalled for safety inspections – though no fix has yet been decided upon. CNN reports that the Center for Auto Safety estimates that it would cost the company around $300-million ($3-billion) to install a 3mm steel plate and other systems that ensure safety of the fuel tank.

Locally, Chrysler spokesperson Richard Sloman has said that Chrysler SA has not received any notification on whether local models are affected. Once the information is available, the company will contact owners to arrange procedures for the recall.

The models affected are the Grand Cherokee manufactured between 1993 and 2004, and the Cherokee manufactured between 2002 and 2007.
