Qualcomm’s blazing fast Snapdragon 800 SoC

Anandtech posted their benchmarks of the next big thing from chip manufacturer Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 800 SoC that was announced at CES and the results are truly mind blowing. While CPU performance is on par with or better than most of its rivals including Qualcomm’s own Snapdragon 600 SoC used in the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One it’s in GPU performance where the Snapdragon 800 truly shines.

The new Adreno 330 unit in the MSM8974 SoC easily bests its contemporaries in almost every test thrown at it sometimes by doubling their performance. Although the results will have to be tempered with the fact that we don’t know what the power usage is on the SoC yet, if early benchmarks are anything to go by, you should be looking to a Snapdragon 800 device as your next smartphone/tablet.

Devices to look forward to with Snapdragon 800

  • Samsung’s CEO J.K. Shin confirmed that it was working on a version of their flagship Galaxy S4 device that has built in LTE-Advanced technology which offers data transmission at up to twice the normal 4G speed (Up to 300Mbps downlink, up to 75Mbps uplink). The phones will be powered by Qualcomm chips according to the report and the chip most likely to be used is the Snapdragon 800.
  • Samsung’s next Galaxy Note could be powered by the Snapdragon 800 which would be able to easily power the 6-inch monster of a display that the device is rumoured to have
  • Nokia is working on a device that is definitely powered by the Snapdragon 800 as seen by the CPU logs on its developer pages. The device could be the first Windows Phone device to feature a 1080p or higher resolution display which the Snapdragon 800 supports or it could be the long rumoured Windows 8 tablet from Nokia.
  • At Computex Microsoft announced an update to Windows 8.1 that would bring Outlook to Windows RT devices. The update is rumoured to coincide with the release of an LTE capable Surface tablet which according to sources would feature a Snapdragon 800 SoC.
