BlackBerry launches MAD challenge for schoolkids

BlackBerry is introducing the world of mobile app development and modern entrepreneurship to high school students through its Mobile Application Development (MAD) Challenge that was recently launched at the University of the Western Cape’s Goldfields Building.

The MAD challenge gives selected students the opportunity to create and market their own mobile applications for BlackBerry handsets and PlayBooks.

Eighty six Grade 10 and 11 learners selected from schools across the Western Cape, were at the event where Dr Johan Breytenbach welcomed and introduced them to the challenge, encouraging collaboration as well as competition.

Hosted by the e-Skills Institute’s Western Cape and Gauteng CoLabs and currently in its second year, the MAD Challenge, takes place at the University of the Western Cape and the BlackBerry Apps Lab in Cape Town based at the Bandwidth Barn.

The students’ mobile apps will be judged on the creativity and entrepreneurial content of the idea behind the app, usability, functionality, completeness, business value motivation, and programming skill.
