New Google satellite images show deforestation and has fewer clouds

Google’s latest satellite images, from the Landsat 8 satellite, show the devastating deforestation in Brazil. The two images above – taken less than 5 years apart – show the extent of the damage to Brazilian rain forests.

The new satellite data will be rolling out to Google Maps and Google Earth in the coming weeks, and will bring higher-resolution imagery to regions where it wasn’t available previously. On the Google LatLong blog Matt Hancher, tech lead for the Google Earth engine, writes that the new images are detailed enough to see texture in the landscapes. The company has also dedicated resources to creating composite images of Earth, allowing for an unnatural, almost cloud-free view of our planet, as seen from space.
