Meet the tweeting badger of Johannesburg Zoo

Everyone tweets. The President of the United States tweets, Ford cars tweet, buses tweet, trains tweet; even Julius Malema tweets. So it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to find out that in a world first, Johannesburg Zoo now have  a Tweetting badger.

This is not a euphemism. Local hackers at Hello Computer were approached by the zoo several months ago in order to come up with a high tech way of increasing the organisation’s profile. Since badgers aren’t adopting social media as fast as they should, Tom Van der Bon and SebastiAn Shocke kitted out BG the badger’s cage with homemade detectors and electronics which are networked up to automatically send updates on his movements to the web.

From their write up:

“Obviously we didn’t just hand BG a smartphone and trained him to use it (although that should maybe be a future project!), but rather we turned his home into a more hi-tech home. This consisted of outfitting his enclosure with Infra-Red sensors that would detect him performing various activities such as playing on his Jungle Gym or when he has retired to his room.”

You can follow BG’s movements at Zoo Tweets Live or by searching for #tweetingbadger. No word yet on when he’ll be getting on Facebook or Instgram.
