Right2Know marches on Joburg for cheaper cell calls

Civil liberties group Right2Know is planning a demonstration against high cell charges in Johannesburg this weekend, with a march from ICASA’s HQ on Katherine Street in Sandton to Cell C’s offices on Rivonia Road this Saturday, 6th July starting at 10am. The march in Joburg follows on from similar protests in Cape Town last month .

The group, which began as a reaction to the planned Protection of State Information Bill – also known as the Secrecy Bill – that’s still going through parliament, has toned down its campaign somewhat over the last few weeks. In the Cape it demanded free calls for all, now it’s slogan has morphed into the rather more sensible call to action against ‘profiteering’ from people’s reliance on cell phones. The call for free airtime and data, as a basic human right, is still in its demands – just not on the front page any more.

The group also wants schools to be added to the list of numbers that are free to call, putting them on a par with emergency services. More specifically – and probably achievabley, it points out that many cell companies are essentially breaking the law by forcing credit to expire after one month. This is against he spirit, if not the letter, of regulations that say pre-pay vouchers should last for three years.
