Nokia Lumia 1020 launched

Nokia took the wrapper of the much anticipated Lumia 1020 in an event in New York earlier today. The device which blends the camera technology of the original PureView device, the Nokia PureView 808, with the polycarbonate design and Windows Phone 8 operating system of the Lumia brand of recent Nokia phones has been on the horizon ever since Nokia made the switch to the new OS after the infamous 2011 ‘Burning Platform’ memo penned by then new CEO Stephen Elop.

The PureView 1020 actually loses a bit of weight and size when compared to the 920 that it replaces at the top of the Nokia pile which, considering the massive imaging sensor it has packed inside of it almost doesn’t make sense. The PureView 808 was no wilting daisy at nearly 14mm thick and 169 grams because of the imaging sensor it had so the Nokia engineers have done exceptionally well to keep the PureView 1020 to where it is.

The 1020 comes complete with a 4.5-inch AMOLED display with Nokia’s ClearBlack technology along with 32GB of internal storage to keep all of those snaps stored and 2GB of RAM to allow the 1020 to process the images in real time.

Along with the phone’s impressive internals comes a massively improved PureView sensor. While still at 41MP the new unit features Nokia’s Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) technology that first made an appearance in the Lumia 920 but now included a Xenon flash. Because of the size of the sensor you the Lumia 1020 is capable of an effective 6X optical zoom even on video by oversampling the image and cutting it down.

Oversampling is a method of taking a photo where a large photo (say 41MP) is taken and zooming can be done before and after the capture by combining pixels to create a highly detailed 5MP photo. The Lumia 1020 saves both versions of the photo after it has been taken so that you can reframe and recreate the photo after you’ve taken it. Stereo sound recording will be handled by what Nokia is calling “digital high performance microphones” which should add some depth to video made by the 1020.

The new Nokia Pro Camera application allows the Lumia 1020 to adjust camera setting on the fly by overlaying things like exposure and manual focus settings on the display and adjusting the image that you see on the display in real time as you change the settings to show you what your final image will look like.

Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop also announced that Nokia was opening up a new imaging SDK so that developers can utilise the technology to build new applications for the Lumia 1020. The technology is being used by CNN, Foursquare, Yelp and for the first time on the Windows Phone platform Path, Flipboard and Hipstamatic’s Oggl Pro photo application which will allow you to share to Facebook Twitter and even Instagram from directly inside the app.

Accessory wise, the Lumia 1020 will have 2 different covers at launch, the first is a wireless charging cover and the second is a camera grip cover that will allow users to take photos one handed in the same way that you would with a point and shoot camera. The camera grip cover comes with a built in 1020mAh battery for extended shooting while using the device as a camera.
