Map Monday: Using Google Maps for your entertainment

Millions of folks use Google Maps every day to help them get around, find eateries, give directions, and share locations. But have you ever used Google Maps to play a game?

If you click on the links in today’s Map Monday then you’ll find out that, yes, you can actually use Google Maps to have some interactive fun. The concept, for both of these games, is simple: use Google Maps Street View to find out which city you’re in. In GeoGuessr you play the guessing game for five rounds. Each round will let you guess where you are, though you’re free to explore using Street View. Once you have an idea of where in the virtual world you are you can place a marker and hope you got it right. Points are awarded, and the closer your guess is to the actual starting location, the more points you get.

In Pursued, the developers have added a plot – and incentive – to the guessing game. Your character is, err, being pursued. You have to use Street View to find out which city you’re in and give your whereabouts to the person on the phone. A correct answer gets you to the next level of the game, but guess incorrectly and you’ll have to give it another go. To complicate things, there’s a 5-minute time limit on each level. If that runs out you’ll get caught by your invisible pursuers. If you’re up for a real challenge, you can enabled Hardcore mode, where you have to guess which street you’re in.
