Multichoice, South Africa’s largest pay television company, took the wraps off of its next generation satellite television decoder named ‘the Explora’. The Explora will bring a greatly expanded internal storage capacity from the 500GB of its predecessors up to 2TB in the new model. The amount of ongoing series in the Catch Up catalogue has been doubled to forty and the Explora will have up to have up to 4 episodes of a show at a time to allow people to catch up to other users who have turned them onto a new show even after it has been running for a few weeks. The Box Office rental service and sports Catch Up offerings will also increase the amount of content that they offer.

There is a new remote for the PVR that features a blue ‘DStv Central’ button which takes you to a very different content browsing service which has been designed to mimic many of the online services like Netflix. The head of DStv Online John Kotsaftis says “We wanted to give customers the same experience as they get in broadband-rich markets,”

The new search screen allows for greater content discovery for users including being able to find the next broadcast for a show or movie that has nearly finished to be able to record it for later viewing.

The Explora have the ability to access the internet through an Ethernet connection and through WiFi and 3G dongles that Multichoice will begin selling in 2014 allowing users to log into the DStv app or the DStv website to set a recording of a show on your set-top-box.

The Explora will be available from online retailer Kalahari.com, who like Multichoice are a subsidiary of Naspers and through retails stores from the 15th of August at a retail price of R2 499.
