Water-powered remote control car doesn’t need batteries

Remember when you unwrapped your Christmas presents, and it was exactly what you wanted?

And every time you’d be left disappointed, because Santa forgot to read the big ol’ label that said “Batteries not included”. Well, from now on that might be a thing of the past. A company called Horizon Fuel Cell technologies has a new remote controlled toy, the i-H2GO, which uses your iPhone as a controller, and uses water as its power source. That’s right, all you’ll need to power your next toy is a glass of nature’s finest.

To power the i-H2GO you fill up its charging station with water. A solar panel then induces electrolysis, separating the water into hydrogen and oxygen. The former is what is used to fuel up the car, which has an on-board fuel cell. No sun? No problem – the refuelling station can also be powered using a USB cable.

At $180 (around R1 800) it might seem expensive, but at the current prices for batteries this will pay for itself within a few weeks.

It’s also worth checking out Horizon’s other projects – there’s even a fuel cell that can power an RC car for 212km.
