Fruit grower builds biggest African rooftop solar array this side of the equator

We all know that fruit is good for you, but South African producer of citric foodstuffs and pre-packed apple and pear juices Ceres is making it a little bit better for the environment too. According to a press release distributed by the grower, it’s investing in a 1MWp photovoltaic array of panels on the roofs of its processing plants, which will help to power refrigeration compressors during the picking season.

The total array will consist of 4 060 SW250 panels from SolarWorld Africa, each of which is capable of producing 250W. Ceres says that it’s making the investment partly for general environmental concerns, but mainly because it’ll reduce grid consumption by 6% over the course of a year and help to offset Eskom price rises. The firm aims to reduce overall energy consumption by 10% over the next three years.
