Anonymous plans 5th November action in Cape Town, Joburg & Durban

Will this be a 5th November to truly remember? South Africans who claim affiliation with hacking collective Anonymous say it will be – they’re organising actions in South Africa’s three main cities to coincide with a global ‘Million Mask March‘ on Guy Fawkes day.

The idea is to don a Guy Fawkes mask – the iconic one designed by David Lloyd for Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta, natch, and ready thyself for protest.

Only the Cape Town event has a confirmed location so far, and almost 100 people have pledged to turn up outside the Parliament buildings in the Mother City at midday. Curiously, the events are being organised through Facebook, not the tool we’d have expected Anonymous to embrace given its leaky NSA nature and the fact that it’s possibly the least anonymous of all social media, but there you go.

The group also warns that the 2009 Gatherings Act states that:

No person shall at any gathering or demonstration wear a disguise or mask or any other apparel or item which obscures his facial features and prevents his identification

So masks aren’t obligatory attire to take part.

More details here; we’ll follow up as soon as we know more.
