Local release date & price for PS4 (Update: Confirmed)

We already know that Microsoft’s next generation console won’t be coming to South Africa this year as they aim to shore up the key North American and European territories with their initial stock of consoles. Sony on the other hand had been expected to launch the console in South Africa before December until last night that is when they announced the initial territories for the console at Gamescom and our small piece of the globe wasn’t on the list.

The official word from the local Playstation distributor Ster Kinekor this morning is that we will be getting the console at the same time as the rest of the Europe (where all of our stock comes from). That means that the console will launch on or around the 29th of November [UPDATE: the local launch date is December 6th]. ITF gaming also managed to get a planned RRP out of Ster Kinekor this morning for our region of R6 299 [UPDATE: confirmed by Ster Kinekor] while the RRP in the UK is £349 which converts to around R5 500 at today’s exchange rate. It seems that we may be getting a slightly raw deal in pricing compared to the rest of the world if this is the case but lets not forget that the PS3 launched at a similar price and it offered a lot less machine for your money.

[UPDATE] Official word now in from Ster Kinekor:

Johannesburg, South Africa, 21 August 2013, Ster Kinekor Entertainment (SKE) today announced that the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) (CUH-1000A series) computer entertainment system will launch on 6th December 2013.

“The price point, although not officially set due to the uncertainty around the Rand exchange rate, is currently planned at an RRP of R 6 299 including VAT and it will not be beyond this for launch. Retail will be communicated to plan at these levels.”
