Microsoft explains the nitty-gritty of Windows 8.1’s 3D printing support

Regular readers will know that 3D printing is pretty close to our hearts here at htxt.africa, because we keep going on about how awesome it is. And it is.

Microsoft apparently agrees with us. So much so, that the upcoming Windows 8.1 patch will come with built-in support for 3D printing, as we reported last month.

In essence, Microsoft has had to create the equivalent of DirectX for 3D Printing, so that everyone involved in the industry has a common language with which to work, so that everyone’s hardware will talk to everyone else’s software. The culmination of Microsoft’s efforts in this regard will roll out as part of Windows 8.1 when it is made available in October 2013.

If you’d like to get into the nitty gritty of how this was done, as well as insight into the actual 3D printing process itself, I highly recommend going through this detailed blog post on Microsoft’s Extreme Windows Blog, written by Microsoft’s Senior Program Manager, Gavin Gear.
