Rhinos invade Pretoria mall

Want to play with rhinos? How about cheetahs, spacemen, raptors and T-Rex? Shoppers at Menlyn Mall in Pretoria have had an almost hands-on opportunity to do just that over the weekend, thanks to an installation by National Geographic and Qualcomm. Qualcomm’s big on augmented reality – mashing together realtime images through a cellphone camera and with virtual images or information on top – so it put together the largest demo suite we’ve seen yet as a cute-but-fun way to illustrate the potential. Still not convinced? Here’s the obligatory link to a 2010 video by Kaiichi Matsuda on the potential/dangers of AR.

Welcome to the future. We hope it has more dinosaurs.
