Skype to get 3D video chat tech

In an interview with the BBC on Wednesday, Microsoft’s  corporate vice-president for Skype, Mark Gillett confirmed that Skype has developed 3D video-calling technology. This news came just a day before the popular communication platform celebrated its 10th birthday.

Gillett went on to say that while the technology works today in Skype’s labs, “it could be many years before the tech launched” due to the devices required to capture 3D footage not being as common as 3D TVs and monitors.

3D footage is captured by shooting a scene using two cameras from slightly different perspectives to create the illusion of depth in the final image. That means to create 3D video chats, both participants will need a dual-webcam setup, and even though 3D webcams do exist that can do the job, the technology is not so ubiquitous that you’ll find it atop the average notebook’s bezel.

With consumer interest in 3D waning, this move by Skype could help to reignite interest in the technology from both consumers and manufacturers alike, especially as Skype is appearing on new platforms like smart TVs and games consoles.
