Screaming while playing zombie games might bring the cops

Zombie survival-horror multiplayer mod DayZ is known for its brutal gameplay, where players have to worry more about other (human) players than they do the actual zombies in the game. For that reason, it’s not unusual for gamers caught up in the moment to scream out things like “Don’t shoot me please I’m begging you!” and “Don’t kill me!” and “I’m bleeding out!” and “Someone get me to a hospital!”, all things which, if heard out of context, could be taken as being something else entirely. Like murder.

That’s exactly what happened in the US, according to a video sent in to videogame website Kotaku this past weekend by one of the site’s readers, “Mathue”. He and his friends were playing DayZ when cops pitched up at one of the gamer’s homes to see if everything was all right. Concerned neighbours, on hearing the loud “I’m being murdered please help me!” type screaming that the game inspired, called the cops, thinking crime was afoot.

Watch the video below to hear the story first-hand from the gamer herself, minutes after the cops left.

If you’d like to test your mettle against other players and see if you’d be better or worse to your fellow gamers in a post-apocalyptic environment where you and your team get to make the rules (if you have enough firepower, manpower and supplies, that is), you will need the full version of Arma II and its expansion Operation Arrowhead before you can download and play the free DayZ mod. Arma II and its expansion can be purchased through Steam, and will cost you R336.60 at today’s exchange rate.
