Build-a-phone: Phonebloks the modular phone concept

Imagine this, you’re buying a new smartphone but instead of finding the latest Apple or Samsung creation you go to the store to buy the best components from each manufacturer; the Sony 20.7MP camera from the Xperia Z1, the behemoth 3200mAh battery from the Galaxy Note 3 and the warm colours of the Super LCD 3 screen found in the HTC One. Sounds great right? But it’ll never happen, well not unless Dutch designer Dave Hakkens gets his dream.

Phonebloks

The Phonebloks concept brings the utopian ideal of phone manufacturers working together to supply consumers with the best parts to create their ideal smartphone. Whether you need a better camera or more battery life, Bluetooth 4.0 or 802.11ac WiFi everything will have a Blok and you’ll be able to switch out and update each component when it breaks or when you want to update your device.

The concept is a fantastic one for consumers but will undoubtedly fail because of 2 crucial factors. Firstly the current climate of smartphone manufacturer relations prevents the kind of cooperation that he needs for this to work and secondly companies like Samsung who make all of the components would rather make the additional profit they generate by selling a complete package to end users.

I commend Dave on his utopian ideal (and his awesome name) but I fear he may never see his dream realised.
