SABC says its channels won’t be included in OpenView HD’s bouquet

A few hours ago the SABC released a press statement in which the national broadcaster categorically denied having any agreement with OpenView HD to include SABC 1, 2 and 3 in OpenView HD’s programming offerings.

According to the release:

The SABC acknowledges the growing digital television broadcasting environment in the country, however the Open View HD pronouncement that SABC television channels will form part of their bouquet is not true, as the public service broadcaster does not have any agreement with the newly launched satellite television service.  The public service broadcaster views this matter in a serious light, as the said satellite provider is misleading the public.

Shortly afterwards, we received an official statement from Platco Digital, the company behind OpenView HD, which read:

Platco Digital notes with interest SABC’s statement of 19th of September, regarding their inclusion on the OpenView HD platform. Platco is surprised by the statement issued by the SABC.  Platco will be carrying SABC 1, 2 and 3 from the launch date.  The SABC as the public broadcaster has various obligations and any attempts by the SABC to prevent Platco from carrying the SABC channels would be unlawful.

This new furore quite possibly explains why I have not received any feedback from OpenView HD/Platco Digital regarding the questions I sent them to clarify exactly which of their channels would be in HD to supplement yesterday’s story on OpenView HD’s announcement. I’ve sent a request for further clarity on this new matter, and will update this story when I have more info.
