Telkom to double ADSL speeds for all

Good news for ADSL subscribers – Telkom sends word that it’s going to double the maximum line speed for wholesale and residential customers free of charge. According to a press release put out this morning, its network upgrade program has reached the stage where it can deliver better performance for less thanks to more exchanges closer to homes “essentially shortening the local loop”.

Sadly it doesn’t mean the arrival of superfast broadband: 10Mbps will remain the fastest available connection, but all customers on 1Mbps lines will now be on 2Mbps, and 2Mbps customers will be on 4Mbps.

The new speeds should start kicking in some time in November, and be complete by February.

And if your not on Telkom but get your net access from another supplier? According to Afrihost, the news is still fresh for partners too, and they’re working out with Telkom what deals to offer – but there will be more news soon.
